Background

Indonesia continues the efforts and actions towards the implementation of its commitments as a Non-Annex I Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). At the same time, Indonesia continues to enhance its domestic capacity to adapt and mitigate climate change in various level, and also its capacity to anticipate land and forest fire at the earliest stage as possible.

PROKLIM (http://proklim.menlh.go.id) is an action program to strengthen adaptation and mitigation of climate change at the local level (village area) to improve the understanding of climate change and to increase community resilience to the impact of climate change. In addition, this program was also designed to encourage active participation of all stakeholders, and to increase community resilience to the impacts of climate change and its contribution to reduction of GHG emissions.

In the area of land and forest fire prevention, some activities has been carried out, such as the establishment of Land and Forest Fire Care Community (MPA) which expectedly to be able to prevent, suppress and control the areas of land and forest fire. The other activities are development of Early Detection Management System Application of forest fire through a web-based system named SIPONGI (http://sipongi.menlhk.go.id) and the establishment of Post-Post Alert/Emergency Haze/Smoke in several provinces in Indonesia.

Indonesia acknowledges the importance of regularly updated national GHG inventory as a basis of climate change policy development and to fulfill its commitment to report to the UNFCCC. In order to implement a transparent, accurate, complete, comparable and consistent GHG inventory, Indonesia developed SIGN SMART, a web-based application to conduct GHG inventory in a simple, easy, accurate, brief and transparent way.

Most areas in Indonesia are vulnerable to climate change; therefore it is a need to have information on vulnerability level in a certain area or development sector to be easily accessed. Vulnerability Index Data and Information System (SIDIK) was developed to fulfill such need and it can be used to monitor the effectiveness of the influence of development policy to changes in the level of vulnerability as well as understanding the relative position of one region with other areas (http://adaptasi.menlh.go.id)

Moderator profile

Prof Rizaldi Boer is the executive director of the Centre for Climate Risk and Opportunity Management in Southeast Asia and Pacific, Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia. Since 1987, he has also been a senior lecturer in the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science at the university. Prof Boer has been involved in many national and international climate research programs related to adaptation and mitigation and has led a number of national and/or regional projects on climate variability and climate change. He is frequently invited as a speaker on climate variability and climate change and as an instructor in a number of training activities related to climate.

Speakers Profile

Dr. Kirsfianti L. Ginoga is a Director of Green House Gases Inventory and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification. She obtained her bachelor degree on Agricultural Business Science from Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), and Magister and Doctoral degree on Natural Resources Management from University of Queensland, Australia. Dr. Ginoga has a long experience as a scientists on the field of social forestry, environmental studies and climate change. She was a Coordinator of Australian Center for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) on Economic Potential of Carbon Sequestration, and International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Coordinator on Demonstration Activity on REDD+ in Meru Betiri East Java before appointed as a director of Center for Research and Development on Climate Change and Policies of Ministry of Forestry. She has published a lot of books and peer reviewed national and international Journal.

Mr. Raffles Brotestes Panjaitan is Director of Forest and Land Fire Management at Ministry of Environment and Forestry. He obtained his bachelor degree from Faculty of Forestry at Bogor Agricultural University and magister degree on Science Forest Management from Aberdeen University, Scotland, UK. Mr. Panjaitan has a long experience as official at Ministry of Forestry with various duties such as forest rehabilitation, nature and biodiversity conservation, and forest protection and investigation.

Mr. Dida Migfar Ridha is Deputy Director for GHG Inventory for Non Land-based Sector at Ministry of Environment and Forestry. He obtained a bachelor and magister degree from Bogor Agricultural University. He has been involved in GHG inventory issues since 2010 as he appointed as Head of Division for GHG Inventory at Ministry of Environment and lead establishment of the Center of National GHG Inventory System (SIGN) and the development of SIGN-SMART application. Mr. Ridha is also involved in various national policies development on climate change and international negotiation process under the UNFCCC.

Ms. Tri Widayati is Deputy Director for Man-made Ecology Adaptation at Ministry of Environment and Forestry. She obtained his bachelor and magister degree on Environmental Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology. She has been involved in climate change adaptation issue since 2010 as she appointed as Head of Division for Climate Change Adaptation Instrument at Ministry of Environment. Ms. Widayati is also actively involved in various national policies development on climate change adaptation and international negotiation process under the UNFCCC.

Mr. Arif Wibowo is Deputy Director for Identification and Assessment of Climate Change Vulnerability. He obtained his bachelor degree on Chemical Engineering from University of Diponegoro, and magister degree on Environmental Pollution Control from University of Leeds, UK. Mr. Wibowo has been appointed in various duties in Ministry of Environment such as environmental impact control, hazardous waste management, and clean production and standardization. Mr. Wibowo is also actively involved in various national policies development on climate change adaptation and international negotiation process under the UNFCCC.
